Writing My Artist Statement

Wow. It's a very important thing for any working artist to have a good artist statement. For me, I need to convey why I do what I do. My art comes to me, not in words, but images. It also comes from a deep place inside of me that needs expression. How on earth does a person put that into words. Words, I enjoy hearing them, reading them and I have a lot of respect for people who have a way with them. I also know, I very important part of me would die if I could not make art.

After a simple Google search, I found a great piece online by Master Certified Coach, Molly Gordon, called "How to Write and Use an Artist's Statement". http://www.mollygordon.com/resources/marketingresources/artstatemt/

I've been working much of the morning following the directions she has and it seems like an excellent exercise in to explore why I make art and how I can convey that to my potential customers.

Like I mentioned, my work comes from a deep place inside, that speaks in symbols like colors, images and forms, so I wonder how to convey that without sounding corny or trite. Believe me! It's all true, I am a deep serious person at times. :)

I have been instructed to write my statement and revisit tomorrow. We will see how it goes.

The Sac Art Complex is INDEED Changing

Oh, you don't know the half of it. Alister Oliver and Susan Rabinovitz just filled me in. We are under new management! I was frightened and unsure, as so much of my life is changing (self induced of course) and yes, all of my insecurities are rearing their heads.

BUT, this is not about my own neurosis, word has it, we are going to have a new store front, a regular gallery space, regular hours, with regular shows, space for community classes, and, and, and, non profit status coming in the near future.

SOOOO this is a good thing. We are excited about the changes.
I'LL BE POSTING PICS AND LINKS TO THE OTHER GREAT ARTISTS IN THE sac SOON.

moving and moving

I just moved to two places. Make that three. I also sort of live with my boyfriend. I also have two cats.

I moved to the small town of Locke California. It's quaint and small, but not so small that you can't be a free spirit. Aparently, there are a bunch of other artists there, but I have not had time to meet them. I hope to soon. I also live next to a somewhat famous artist, can I say the name? I might get in trouble. He has a dog that is cute, but not so quiet. www.locketown.com

I also moved my home art studio into a place. It WAS called Sacramento Art Complex. http://www.sacramentoartcomplex.com/ We just found out that our main dude is pulling out, so we are becoming a loosely formed collection of artists. I am going to suggest we change the name to Sacramento Artist Collective. I like it! Stay tuned, I am excited to see how we do. We have two great artists in the building who are organizing lots of activities and marketing us as well. Yay! I'm not good at running things, but I can follow, make suggestions and help out. I generally get a long well with others too.
